Before then people from both countries travelled through the Saitaku checkpoint every day for trade activities from 8am - 5pm. Santi Uthumporn, mayor of tambon Chanthop Phet Municipality in Ban Kruat district, said trade had plunged from several million baht a week to almost zero. The people of Ban Kruat district had hoped the opening of Saitaku temporary checkpoint, which they had long awaited, would bring the cross-border economy to life. They even wanted it upgraded as a permanent border checkpoint, Mr Santi added.
